陈志勇（Shaun Tan）,1974年生于西澳大利亚的首府珀斯，在郊区长大。父亲是马来西亚华侨，母亲是澳大利亚人。从小，班里个子最小的他就是全校知名的画画高手，十几岁时即开始为科幻小说和恐怖故事绘制插图。1995年从西澳大利亚大学毕业，获得美术与英语语言文学双学位。后成为自由插画师，并在电影《霍顿与无名氏》和《机器人瓦力》中出任过造型设计。曾两次获得世界科幻协会颁发的“雨果奖最佳美术奖”，四度获得“世界奇幻奖最佳艺术家”称号。2011年，荣获由瑞典政府颁发的林格伦儿童文学奖。同年3月，改编自他的同名绘本并由他导演的动画《失物招领》也获得第83届奥斯卡最佳动画短片奖。绘本作品有《抵岸》（获2007年博洛尼亚书展特别评审奖）《绯红树》《别的国家都没有》《夏天守则》《蝉》等十几部。现居墨尔本。
